winter’s long shadows are cast like a net over landscape and soul
as days get longer they also get colder, it’s winter’s irony
footsteps squeak and crunch on a thin blanket of snow in a winter snap
on days overcast one can pretend time stands still and just be lazy
why are we festive at winter’s beginning and not at winter’s worst
winter wind returns icing over the windows now closed until spring
winter reminds us just how quickly things can change that we can’t control
there is a quiet that only winter can bring let’s not ignore it
as winter rolls in we decorate the darkness to disguise our fears
